How Propagation Works in DNS
In order to ensure all DNS information is current, the Secondary servers will check periodically with the Primary server to see if there have been any changes in the data hosted there.
The interval at which this check occurs is called the Refresh rate for the domain, and it is defined by a DNS record called the Start Of Authority (SOA) record associated with that DNS zone.
The Refresh interval determines how often all the Secondary servers get updates from the Primary DNS.
Refresh intervals seen on the Internet are anywhere from 30 minutes to a couple of hours, but can vary based on what the network administrator chooses to specify.
There is another mechanism in DNS that can make these changes propagate even faster.
Called DNS Notify, this mechanism makes the Primary server proactively notify the Secondary servers that there has been an update that they need to get.
The use of DNS Notify can reduce the interval between authoritative servers to a few seconds.
Time to Live (TTL)
When you look up a DNS name (or when your browser does), you query the authoritative server through a process known as recursion.
The system of resolving one domain name to one IP address is decentralized and widely implemented on the Internet — but you will need an authoritative set of the IP addresses for yours.
A DNS server nearest to you, a so-called caching DNS server, is the one your server would usually query whenever it has a question for DNS.
This server’s job is to locate the correct Authoritative server to obtain the information you want.
Any DNS records your Caching server finds will come with a Time To Live.
In order to avoid overloading the Authoritative servers, a Caching server when resolving a DNS name will remember it for a while.
If a record is requested more than once (or the question is asked again), the Caching server does not have to acquire the information more than once.
It can just deliver the information that it has cached, assuming the information is fresh.
Does Changing Nameservers Affect SEO
